Neither of us slept soundly last night
You, thinking about your early morning flight
to a place far away, and not wanting to oversleep.
Me, holding onto and thinking about you…leaving.
I tried to see you in the darkness
but your closed eyelids protected your
green, brown eyes from my wanton view.
The softness of your skin rested beneath
my touch as I moved my hands across
your body trying to memorize every curvature
and indentation without awakening you.
My attention given to your every breath and sigh
on this our first night sharing the same bed.
I was warm then, lying unmovable, next to you.
In the morning we embraced one last time,
and you whispered into my ear, “I love you.”
Then you waived to me through darkened car windows.
“Let’s not say goodbye,” you said, as I returned,
to a cold, lonely bed, searching for sleep in place of you.
